PFAS FAQ

Recently, as of May of 2024, some private wells tested in Pound Ridge have revealed the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," in their drinking water at levels exceeding both State and EPA standards. This occurrence is not exclusive to Pound Ridge, as PFAS contamination has been detected in public and private water systems across the nation.

In essence, PFAS are synthetic compounds that have been utilized in various industrial and consumer applications since the 1940s. Due to their extensive use and environmental persistence, PFAS have become ubiquitous in the bloodstream of individuals and animals worldwide. While exposure to PFAS is prevalent through multiple pathways such as ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact, the associated risk with waterborne exposure is deemed minimal.

For residents of Pound Ridge concerned about PFAS contamination in their household's private wells, it is advisable to seek assistance from a New York State-accredited laboratory. These laboratories can offer guidance on appropriate testing methodologies, interpret test results, and recommend suitable measures to mitigate PFAS levels in private wells.
