Westchester Power Program Renewal
SUSTAINABLE WESTCHESTER GREEN POWER
Westchester Power, a program of Sustainable Westchester, has provided a platform for local residents and small businesses to source renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the past eight years.
This fall, Westchester Power has entered into a new contract with Constellation New Energy for renewable energy supplies, primarily sourced from hydropower within New York State. This contract will be in place for NYSEG customers starting in December. Pound Ridge residents and businesses participating in the program have already received update letters from Sustainable Westchester regarding the new terms (click on attachment below for NYSEG Letter).
Key Details Include:
Energy Supply Options - Participants will be opted into 100% renewable energy or may opt into a mix of 50% renewable energy and 50% grid mix, a mostly fossil fuel-based supply.
Rates - The new supply contract offers a fixed rate for 12 months, providing stability compared to the variable rates of NYSEG. However, fixed rates may not always be the most cost-effective option and they have recently been higher than the standard utility rates. See comparisons below.
Program Benefits - Westchester Power allows participants to opt out and back in without penalties and at any time, unlike typical third-party energy suppliers that charge high fees for opting out early. The Westchester Power program rules require a competitive, triple-bidding process for sourcing renewable energy to source the lowest possible fixed rate cost of electricity at the time of bidding.
